Learning flight planning is an important part to learning how to operate an aircraft.  After all, the safety and success of every flight depends on the preparing of the flight plan whether it is just a local flight or a 500 mile cross-country trip.  Before a you can hope to spend hours airborne, learning how to prepare for a flight is essential.

In my mind there are two types of flight planning: Local Flight Planning and Cross-Country Flight Planning. The first, local flight planning, compliments cross-country flight planning because in order to do the second, you must know the basics of local flight planning.

Five Tips for Finding the Best Flight Instructors

Your very first flight instructor will have huge impact on your learning, that is why it’s important to find one who can make the training process pleasant, organized and worth all the time, effort and money you will be putting into it. If becoming a pilot is your dream, here are some tips on how to choose the flight instructor who will best fit your needs:

1. Your Flight Instructor Must Be Qualified

Your flight instructor became one because he or she earned some advanced pilot certificates. That means that they hold either a commercial pilot certificate or an airline transport pilot (ATP) certificate in order to instruct. Furthermore, they can’t teach unless they have a certificated (not certified) flight instructor (CFI) rating.  Look for this with your primary flight instructor. They might also have an Instrument Rating and Multi-engine Rating as well, all the better. If you are learning a specific type of flying like tail-dragger and float plane, they will have had training in those areas and endorsements to prove it.

Consider the following factors when choosing a flight school:

1. PART 61 or PART 141

These are the two primary types of flight schools you are going to find.

Part 141 are schools approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to teach a curriculum based courses and allow you to earn your certificates in fewer hours.

Now there are a lot of products out there that a pilot can have but there are only a few that you MUST have. Now granted, some of these things you might not need to have right away but you will down the road. Some of the products I will mention will make your life easier from the start and some, well, just like an insurance policy, you may not need it right away, but you will be glad you have them if the time ever arises that you do. So look over the list and see what makes sense to you now and what you can wait on, but don’t wait too long…

So, is it your first time to take the pilot’s seat and fly your own plane? If so, make sure that you buy the following supplies make your flying for efficient and to ensure your safety during the flight.

There are several types of bags that you may need depending on the type of flying you are doing. A student pilot obviously doesn’t need the same type of bags as an airline pilot, but read through the list and see what I mean:

Aviation Headset Bag

A headset bag is a must to protect your headset from damage when not in use. Recently I’ve noticed that if you buy a new headset, the company will include the headset bag with the purchase. That’s cool! But if you already have a headset, then consider getting a headset bag.
