Airline Interview Series by Flightdeck Consulting – Part 1 of 5

Posted by Jeffrey on January 19th, 2011

Flightdeck Consulting BannerAirline hiring is going to be on the rise again soon and recently I’ve been talking to Jason at Flightdeck Consulting about it. We both agreed how difficult airline interviews are and how we both think that soon, maybe this year, maybe next year, the airlines are going to start interviewing and hiring again. If you are one of those flight instructors or freight dogs that have been stuck in your flying job for years because no one was interviewing, well your wait may be over.

The big question is, “Are you ready?”

Remember, “Luck favors those that are prepared.” And airline interviews are no different. You simply can’t go into an interview and think that they are going to hand you that jet job. Interview teams have had years to refine their hiring process and now they can be VERY selective. The pool of applicants is going to be large and interview teams are going to be be very selective on who they let onto the flight deck.

So YOUR job is to be prepared!

That is why Flightdeck Consulting offered to provide a 5-part series on the interviewing process. Over the next couple weeks, I’ll add another short article that Jason has put together. I think you will find them very useful. Plus if you would like to learn more about the interview process and being prepared, you can visit their website. They have a DVD you can buy that is awesome and will take a lot of the guess work out of the interview so that you can go into it confident and prepared. Remember, it is not magic once you know what the magician knows. And just so you know, I don’t make any money off this referral. I just want you to be prepared.

So, here is Part 1 of Airline Interviews in 2011:

Airline Interviews in 2011 – Behavioral Interviewing – Part 1

By Flightdeck Consulting

Airline recruitment in the U.S. this year is expected to be tight with large numbers of qualified pilots competing for the limited positions.

In the past candidates with the highest qualifications were best placed for the job offer. This is no longer the case. With the introduction of behavioral based interviews younger, better prepared pilots are filling the right seat.

Behavioral interviewing is based on the assumption that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior. You will know you are being hit with a behavioral question when it begins with “Tell us about a time…”

Now, imagine your sitting in your airline interview, polished shoes and new suit, resume gleaming with your achievements and from out of nowhere comes:

“Tell me about a time when you got co-workers or classmates who disliked each other to work together. How did you accomplish this? What was the outcome?”

Beads of sweat start forming on your forehead as you struggle for an example, “What has this got to do with being an airline pilot!” you think to yourself.

Next week we will give a simple formula to tackle and shine through when faced with the dreaded Behavioral Based Interview.

Cheers,

Jason
