Airline Interview – Part 4 of 5 – Know The Company

Posted by Jeffrey on March 23rd, 2011

Flightdeck Consulting for PilotsOver the last couple weeks, Jason, from FlightDeck Consulting, has been giving out some GREAT information on how to prepare for your upcoming airline interview.

If you would like to catch up on what has been covered so far, here are the links to those articles:

In this article, Jason covers something that is just as important as having the hours and skills to be an airline pilot and that is to know the airline company you are applying to and know how to tell that human resource rep that they have the best airline in the industry and that you REALLY want to work for them.

You see, if you don’t think that an airline interview is a “game,” then you are missing a big part of a picture. You have to be “over ready” for the interview when you walk into the interview leaving no area of the airline industry unexplored. You have essentially be an actor, have industry knowledge, and you have to know how to interview. You need to look better, answer questions better, and be a better prepared pilot than the pilot next to you. Being ready IS part of the “game.” Those that don’t get the job go home.

So read carefully what Jason has to say and work it into your airline interview skills.

Airline Interview – Know the Company – Part 4

So <your name here>, why do you want to work for us?”  asks the chief pilot as they lean back, cross their arms and looks at you with that hint of a smirk on their face.

As you pause and prepare your rehearsed response, just remember that there is nothing that the Human Resources Department loves more than being lavished with praise about their airline…so that is what we are going to give them, respectfully of course!

Your well prepared answer will give you the opportunity to display both your enthusiasm for working with this company as well as showcasing that you have done your research.

It is essential to do your homework on this one! You need to visit the company’s homepage, research Wikipedia, set up alerts on Google months in advance, and speak to current employees. Gather as much information as possible on the company’s ethos, culture, expansion plans, future directions, etc.

Grab yourself some descriptive words to incorporate into your answer. Words like  include: dynamic, dedicated, enthusiastic, passionate and so on, are music to HR’s ears when you describe their company to them.

When constructing your answer it is essential that you close with a statement on how you see yourself fitting into their company.

Here’s an example:

Virgin America has an innovative approach to business with a very dynamic and forward way of thinking. I am really impressed with how they think outside of the square with their advertising campaigns.

The company has a secure financial position with recent expansions internationally into Canada and Mexico providing plenty of opportunity for future career advancement.

They have a modern fleet of A320’s that are highly efficient, flying to interesting and diverse destinations.

Everyone I’ve talked to in the company seems to have an energy about them that is contagious, they are open, upbeat and friendly. On a personal note working for Virgin America would offer me a long-term stable career with boundless opportunities in an environment that is enjoyable, ever changing and one that I would be very proud to be a part of.”

In your answer we have covered all bases. We have shown our enthusiasm, research, knowledge, and desire to work for this company. Really, who wouldn’t want to employ us!

So are you excited about interviewing yet?

In a couple days, we are going to finish up with the minefield of constructing answers to technical questions.

Humph. I think this is ~semi-good advice, but let’s don’t get into overkill mode here. That youngster from the HR department is not a fool and s/he understand canned bull pucky when s/he hears it. Demonstrate some knowledge of the company and agree with the the basics, but please, leave it there. Sucking up and proving that you have read their website won’t get you hired. That snot-nosed kid wahts to see functional brains and adaptability, not a company line kiss-ass, especially for pilots. Need I say more? -C.

I’m not sure you said anything at all! Hey, but thanks for leaving comment!
