3 Flying Tips to Think About

Posted by Jeffrey on 10th June 2010

Complete IFR Proficiency SeriesWhen a pilot is flying on instrument flight rules (IFR), a successfully executed ILS approach is what most pilots aspire to. I mean how awesome is it to be in the clouds, being bumped around, having to work the radios, all the while organizing and planning for an ILS approach to minimums, when all of a sudden you reach your decision height (DH) and there is the approach lights and the runway.

OK, you can breath now…

Do you remember when it was all so confusing and you thought that you would never learn how to do one?

I still sit up and get excited when I’m in the weather doing the ILS approach. It is serious business.

That is why I thought I’d to talk briefly about three instrument related things today:

  1. Planning and the “Next Two Things”
  2. Glass cockpits and the “What-If” Game
  3. The GPS and a Backup Plan

Planning and the “Next Two Things”

We have all heard that flying is all about the “next two things.”

You should always be planning for what comes next and then what comes after that. If you are just sitting there with nothing to do, you are already falling behind and soon you may find yourself literally hanging off the tail as the airplane goes where IT wants to go.

How To Maintain IFR Proficiency

Posted by Jeffrey on 26th March 2010

On Top IFR Proficiency PlatformOnce you become a pilot, you have a lot of things you need to do to stay proficient and be able to exercise your pilot-in-command (PIC) privileges.

Take offs and landings, night landings, biennial flight reviews (BFR), and spins…OK, maybe not spins, but you get the point.

Unfortunately, these are not ”one-off” things. Flying takes practice and constant exposure to be safe.

One thing I always see slip is IFR proficiency. I’m not talking about currency, I’m talking about proficiency.

Many pilots get their instrument rating and never use it. Others get their ratings but fly IFR so rarely that they scare themselves out of flying when they do go. Some pilots go to their flight school, shoot their approaches using a simulator (FAR 61.57) and call it good. Now they are current and at least it’s something but it’s not real IFR flying. You need more.

If you have an instrument rating, you need to use it.

Simulators and IFR Proficiency

Posted by Jeffrey on 6th August 2009

A couple weeks ago I wrote about using simulators. You can see the whole article here:

Flight Simulators: A Great Way to Learn and Experience Flying.

But two things have happened since I wrote that post.

First, I had my recurrent simulator training at FlightSafety in Salt Lake City and second, a friend of mine had an interview with Colgan airlines.

First, my simulator story.

If you remember, back in January 2009, I had a Line-Oriented Flight Training simulator session or LOFT. Incredibly useful and dare I say, fun? I learned a lot and still apply what I learned that day when I fly. The most important thing I learned that day was when you have an emergency, do not delay declaring an emergency. Once you’ve declared an emergency, everyone is focused on you and helping you and then you can focus on the task of getting the airplane on the ground—safely!

“Instrument Flying Update” Book Review

Posted by Jeffrey on 8th July 2009

Being a pilot isn’t about just getting your certificates and ratings. These are really just tickets to learn. Even now, after thousands of hours in single-engine airplanes and the CRJ, I am still learning. Sometimes it’s little things but sometimes it is really big things like this book:

Instrument Flying Update: What every Instrument Pilot Needs to Know About the New Rules on Approach Transitions, WAAS, LPV, LNAV/VNAV, RNAV SIDs, TAWS, and Much More” by John Eckalbar’s

I found that I had gotten into a rut on my instrument flying. That is pretty easy to do when you fly for an airline. Flight Dispatch plans your flight, tells you the weather, and whether or not there is a chance to divert. Pretty easy stuff. You just have to manage the in-between stuff. Then one day the company decided to implement GPS approaches. Why we hadn’t done it sooner, I don’t know. GPS approaches are efficient and in many cases can get you down to 200 feet above ground level (AGL) which is equivalent to a Category I ILS approach. Of course I understood the basics of GPS but my knowledge was behind on the mechanics of the GPS approach.
